2019 Tony Awards Recap


On June 9, 2019, The American Theatre Wing awarded Tonys to many of the shows that opened during the 2018-2019 season. The big winners of the night were Hadestown and The Ferryman, taking home the top honors of Best Musical and Best Play. The reimagined Oklahoma was awarded Best Revival of a Musical, while the star-studded and acclaimed revival of The Boys in the Band took home to award for Best Revival of a Play.

History was also made as Rachel Chavkin became only the tenth woman in history to win in either the play or musical category for Best Direction, and Ali Stroker became the first person in wheelchair to win a Tony for her performance as Ado Annie. Stroker dedicated the award to all the children watching with disabilities or challenges, saying that they are represented in the theater arena.
