Review: David Byrne's American Utopia

November 18, 2019

David Byrne's American Utopia is not just any concert. After ninety minutes in the Hudson Theatre, you'll leave feeling as if you've come close to paradise. With an incredible band and infectious amounts of joy, it's hard not to enjoy the wonderful show that the Talking Heads frontman has created.

Featuring songs from "Burning Down the House," which has the entire audience on their feet, to "Road to Nowhere," and more, American Utopia lies somewhere between concert and jukebox musical. Between songs, Byrne takes the opportunity to share in the fun with the audience, explaining what each song means to him and introducing us to his fabulous band and dancers.

With everyone on stage clad in grey suits and no shoes, you may think that the show wants everyone to be the same. However, that is far from the cast. Each person who joins Byrne's show has enough energy to continue to fill the room long past the last audience members leave their seats. Between the sheer number of instruments the band can play, Byrne's singing, and the dancers electric movement it is clearly a night that will leave you on cloud nine for a long time to come.
