Review: Julie Madly Deeply at 59E59

June 25, 2019

Who doesn't love Julie Andrews? From My Fair Lady to The Sound of Music and beyond, she has touched the lives of millions of people through the incredible work she has done. In Julie Madly Deeply, Sarah-Louise Young and Michael Roulston pay tribute to her in the form of an engaging, clever, and energetic cabaret act that they present with only one disclaimer, that neither of them are Julie herself. However, that will not deter anyone from enjoying Julie Madly Deeply and the infectious spirit it shares with everyone who sees it.

What is so unique about this show is that it is nothing like what you expect it to be. More of a cabaret act than a musical, Young takes the audience through the life of Julie Andrews, playing all the characters necessary to tell the story, including Julie herself. It's a mad dash to make it through such an incredible career in the span of about two hours, but Young and Roulston manage to do so with grace and poise.

While everything from Young's singing to her clever storytelling and audience questions make for such a lovely evening, you will truly be reminded of the impact that Julie Andrews has had on the lives of the people around when the show has ended. Everyone is invited to join in singing along to a medley of some of the most beloved tunes Andrews has sung, from "Wouldn't It Be Loverly?" to "A Spoonful of Sugar" and more. It is that moment that Young's show has done what it set out to do. And that is to share the joy that Julie Andrews has brought so many over so many years.
