With a stunningly talented pair of hosts and several big winners, the 72nd Annual Tony Awards awarded some of the most praised shows of the season, gave us a few surprises, and shut out some of the fiercest competition.
The Band's Visit was the hit of the night when it came to musicals, taking home 10 awards for Best Musical, and for three of it's actors. In a surprise twist, Once on this Island won Best Revival of a Musical, shocking the producers as well, who even said that it was not how they expected the night to go. Both My Fair Lady and SpongeBob Squarepants received an award each for costumes and scenic design, respectively.
Shockingly, Tina Fey's sharp and witty book for Mean Girls was not a winner as Mean Girls was completely shut out of the winners of the evening, despite the 12 nominations. Carousel had two winners when Lindsay Mendez won for her performance as Carrie Pipperidge and Justin Peck took home the award for his choreography.
Unsurprisingly, Harry Potter and Angels in America were the frontrunners in the play category, taking home Best Play and Best Revival of a Play. Harry Potter won greatly in the design category, while Angels in America got awards for Andrew Garfield and Nathan Lane. Three Tall Women also was nicely awarded for not only Glenda Jackson, but Laurie Metcalf as well who looked shocked upon hearing her name called.
The performances were some of the best parts of the evening, and with some lovely work from hosts Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban, the evening seemed to fly by.
